Rest As a Strategy, Not a Luxury
[00:00:00]:
You. So today’s episode is our final one for 2025. And it’s intentionally spacious. Not an urgency pep talk, Not a finish strong directive, just an invitation, a remembering. A gentle return to the version of you who doesn’t have to earn rest through exhaustion. You. Because rest is not a luxury, it’s a strategy. So let’s take a breath together, shall we? What a great way to start.
Tracy Tutty [00:00:34]:
So take a breath with me. Hand on heart, breathing in. Hold it at the top and breathe out. Feels good, doesn’t it? Think of that out breath as a soft exhale to mark the close of your year. You know, this is the time of year where your body starts whispering before your mind even realises that it’s time to slow down. Maybe you’ve felt that the way you linger just a little longer at the kettle. The way a task that felt urgent last week suddenly feels optional. Or that quiet softening across your shoulders when you realise, even if it’s only for a moment, that no one is waiting for anything from you right now.
[00:01:27]:
And if you’re anything like the woman I work with, and I suspect you might be, you’ve been taught that rest is the thing. You fit in after everything else is done and after everyone else has been taken care of. But here’s what your biology’s been trying to say all year. In its quiet, loyal way, your brilliance doesn’t come from the doing, it comes from the coherence beneath it. You know, before we go any further, I want to pause with you here, because it’s easy to intellectually understand that rest matters, right? And I bet your mind’s already telling you that you don’t have time for that. You’ve got a million things to do. And I’m guessing that your mind is being very convincing right now. And maybe it’s a very familiar story as well, so it feels comfortable.
[00:02:20]:
But the real shift happens when you begin to recognise yourself in the subtle ways your body’s been trying to get your attention. Because here’s the thing, you’ve got a unique nervous system imprint. A personal, deeply learned patterning that shapes how your body signals. I need something. Your cues won’t look like anyone else’s. And this level of awareness changes everything. It changes the way you lead your team and it absolutely changes the way you lead yourself. So let’s gently name a few of those micro moments.
[00:02:57]:
Hey. Because they’re close, they’re so woven into your daily life that you might not even notice the energetic toll. Because these aren’t dramatic burnout Signs, they’re quieter, they’re more sophisticated, more reflective of a woman who’s competent, she’s responsible, she’s deeply committed. Here’s what it might look like, that quick check of your work email on a Saturday, you’re not working, you’re just staying ahead of Monday. But the energy cost of that’s real. Because the moment you check, you’re back in work. Even if you’re also at the playground or doing the ironing or folding laundry or doing the thing with the kids, you’re physically there, but you’re not really present and they can tell. And now you’re carrying the emotional meaning of whatever you read, the tone, the implications, the to do’s, you’re second guessing you’re carrying that through your entire weekend.
[00:03:57]:
What about this one? That ripple of discomfort when you finally have downtime, you don’t quite know what to do with it, right? You know that internal commentary of well, I can’t be lazy even when you’re simply resting and let’s talk about that. I’m having a lazy day, huh? It’s loaded, it’s full of judgement and it’s a story that you’d never apply to someone you love. Or how about this one? That late night, I’ll just tidy this up moment. Not because you don’t trust your team, but because control has learned to masquerade as being over prepared. And you’ve been conditioned to believe that this is what an on top of it leader does, when really it’s just your nervous system trying to keep you safe through anticipation. Now, none of these moments make you wrong, okay? They’re actually showing how brilliantly your system’s been working to protect you. But once you begin recognising your personal signature, your own nervous system’s way of whispering for your attention, you start leading from an entirely different place. Not from vigilance, not from over preparedness, but from coherence.
[00:05:11]:
And you know what often happens right about now? There’s this quiet tug of war inside of you. Your mind’s saying, come on, push through. Get everything wrapped up before the year ends. You can rest once it’s all done, that classic end of year urgency. Even though the deadline is entirely fabricated. Nothing magical happens on 31 December. But at the very same time as all this is going on inside of your head, your body’s whispering something completely different. She’s saying, slow down, soften your grip.
[00:05:49]:
This is when we get to release and renew two competing rhythms, right? Two very different truths. And it can feel Confusing, because both voices sound compelling in their own way. So here’s the shift that I really do want for you. You. Your nervous system isn’t trying to slow you down out of sabotage. It isn’t being dramatic or inconvenient. It isn’t trying to derail your goals. It’s trying to guide you back into safety.
[00:06:22]:
Real safety. The kind that renews clarity instead of draining it. Your body understands the turning of the year, even if your calendar doesn’t. It knows when the cycle is asking for softness. It knows when it needs space to integrate everything you’ve held. Rest isn’t the opposite of ambition. Rest is what makes ambition sustainable. Coherence creates safety, presence creates influence.
[00:06:52]:
And rest is what returns you to both. And before we move forward, I want to gently name something that really gets said out loud. Most high achieving women were never actually taught what rest is. We were only taught what not working looks like. Scrolling on the sofa, binge watching something that you actually don’t even care about. Maybe lying down for 10 minutes until the guilt kicks in and you get back up again to finish off what’s on that list. That’s not rest. That’s the absence of productivity.
[00:07:32]:
Rest is something entirely different. Rest is biological, it’s not performative. Rest is when your nervous system shifts out of vigilance and into coherence. It’s when your internal bracing softens, your mind stops scanning for the next thing, and your body stops preparing for imaginary immediate emergencies. Rest is a moment where you can feel yourself again when you’re actually in your life instead of hovering just above it. Planning, anticipating, mentally rehearsing. And here’s the part most women don’t realise until much later. You can be horizontal and still not resting.
[00:08:15]:
You can be walking through the garden, washing the dishes, or breathing at the kitchen bench and be more restored than you felt in months. Rest is about presence. It’s nervous system permission. Rest is that soft click from holding it together into actually, I’m allowed to be here. And when you start giving yourself that kind of rest, real rest, everything changes. So it makes me wonder, what would your New year feel like if you embraced the idea that when you rest, your leadership sharpens. If rest wasn’t something you earned at the end of depletion, but something that actively elevates the way you show up. Because when you do allow yourself to rest, to really rest, your decision making gets cleaner.
[00:09:11]:
Your emotional authority deepens. You read rooms differently. You respond rather than react. Your intuition becomes a precise instrument instead of a faint suggestion. Your creativity resurfaces. Now, this isn’t indulgence, this is strategy. This is the new edge. The edge you get from pushing is temporary, the edge you get from coherence.
[00:09:38]:
While it’s sustainable, it’s elegant and it’s magnetic. This is where my two worlds come together. Herbal medicine and neuro identity. Now, you’ve heard me mention nervines in previous episodes, right? So let me say a little bit more about them because they are amazing. So nervines are a category of herbs that work directly with your nervous system and they do it in a way that feels personal, almost tailored, because herbs don’t form, they nudge. Now, when it comes to nervines, herbalists tend to group them into three types. You’ve got your nervine stimulants, so these are the herbs that gently wake you up. You’ve got your nervine relaxants, and these are the herbs that soothe and settle.
[00:10:22]:
And you’ve got your nervine tonics. And these are the herbs that nourish and rebuild your nervous system over time. And I see this all the time in clinic, right? Someone sits down with me and they say, you know what? I. I just need something to give me more energy. But once we explore what’s really happening, their physiology, their emotional landscape, the pace of their life, what they truly need is something that soothes and replenishes. They need to refill the reservoir before they can light the fire. Let me say it again because it’s so important. What they actually need to do is refill the reservoir before they can light the fire.
[00:11:09]:
And that’s the essence of nervines. They smooth the frazzle. They help your system soften without collapsing. They ease the bracing you’ve worn like armour. They shift you from holding it all together into I can breathe again. They don’t override you. They meet you. They whisper.
[00:11:29]:
They whisper, it’s safe now. And this is exactly why I love the intersection of herbal medicine and neuro identity coaching, right? Because herbs can nudge your physiology into a steadier, more coherent state. But it’s the identity work that reroutes the thoughts, the beliefs and the behaviours that were triggering that physiological cascade in the first place. The herbal support steadies the body. The identity work rewires the pattern. Together, they create lasting change, not just relief. So when your biology and your identity stop fighting each other, rest becomes a power source, not a pause. So before we close, I want to invite you into one more moment, just a breath, just a pause as just be you.
[00:12:27]:
You carried so much this year. You showed up in ways nobody saw. You made decisions that required quiet courage. You held emotional labour that wasn’t part of your job description. You did things this year that would have stretched anyone and you carried them with such integrity. So let this be your moment of acknowledgement. Just take a breath in, hand on heart. Just breathe in with me.
[00:12:57]:
Acknowledge everything that you’ve achieved this year. Just breathe it in. Hold it at the top. Release that breath. You did beautifully. Really, truly, beautifully. And if this conversation’s landing in your body, if something in you is saying, yes, I need this, I’ve created something special for you. Your 2025 closing ritual.
[00:13:31]:
It’s softly guided, it’s deeply grounding. It’s designed to help you finish this year with coherence, clarity and a sense of spirit, spaciousness that you can feel in your bones. And the great thing is, there’s nothing you need to do for it. You get to be held. You get to be guided. You get to sit with your inner wisdom and let it speak. As the year turns, may you meet the season with softness, with presence and with a nervous system that feels supported, steady and truly yours. [00:14:15]:
Tea with tea. Do you like what I did there? Anyway, rest well, my friend. Your next season will thank you for that. Until 2026, I’m sending you lots of love. Bye for now.
